The Bhagawadgita or The Divine Song
The Bhagawadgita or The Divine Song
There are two great epics to illustrate the historical nature
of Bharata varsha. The first one is the Ramayana presented by Sri Valmiki and
the second one –the Mahabaharata, an invaluable gift to mankind by Bhagawan Sri
Vedavyasa. The guide lines for leading an ideal life were practically
demonstrated in the Ramayana as the life of Sri Rama, where as the principles
for removing the miseries in the human life by understanding the bonding nature
of action and for practicing the spiritual progress and there by obtaining
salvation are given in the Mahabharata simplifying them as the Bhagawadgita.
Before the beginning of the Kurukshetra war, Arjuna saw the both
armies arrayed in the battle field. His mind was deeply agitated as he was
going to be the reason for slaying the kith and kin, all blood relations and
the pros and cons after the war. Krisha, his charioteer spoke to him in order
to quell his agitation and remove his doubts. Krishna’s exhortation to Arjuna
at that juncture in the Bhagawadgita, which is enshrined in millions of hearts
as the word of God, and which is acknowledged by all as one of the supreme
treasures of human literature. The gospel of devotion to duty, without
attachment of desire or reward has shown the way of life for all men, rich or poor,
learned or ignorant who have sought refuge and for light in the dark problems
of life.
Human life is a battle field. All will get confusion at one
stage or other, while deciding which is good and which is bad and if the
actions are of binding nature, why not to refrain from them altogether. Arjuna
is a replica of the confused soul as such. The Lord Himself preaches the
necessity of performing one’s own duty without attachment and anticipation of
the fruit of action, where by one will not be bound to the shackles of
attachment and ultimately qualified for liberation from the vicious circle of
births and deaths.
For the theists as well as atheist, the Bhagawadgita provides
solutions for each and every problem of any nature in the day to day life and
enables them to get rid of the grief arose due to those problems.
The Mahabharata is itself 18 parvas out of which, with 18 chapters
blossoms the Bhagawadgita through the lotus –like face of Lord. All chapters
carry equal prominence... However, the Lord with great compassion, presents to
us a variety of points of great truth and wonder, one in each chapter. As a
book of scripture, the Bhagawadgita has assumed a position of universal
interest. Its teachings have gained appreciation not only in India , but far
beyond its borders. Its greatness was acknowledged from the time immemorial by
multitudes of people. The subject is ever green presenting a somewhat strange
point to our understanding at each recitation. Hence nobody can say that he has
fully mastered the Gita and under stood the hidden meanings in it.
All men, irrespective of caste, creed, status and sex possess
the right to study the Gita: the only qualifications needed being faith and
reverence. Hence those who desire their own welfare may go through the Gita
with faith and reverence for spiritual practice and for realizing the divine
truth that how improper it is to waste even a single moment of one’s time in
indulging in the transient pleasures, which are roots of all types of miseries.
They may encourage their children also for undertaking this practice.
