Mangal Pandey: The Spark of India’s First War of Independence

  Introduction Mangal Pandey is a name that resonates with courage and patriotism in Indian history. His actions in 1857 ignited the spark for what is often referred to as the First War of Independence. Early Life Mangal Pandey was born on July 19, 1827, in a small village near Faizabad in Uttar Pradesh. He came from a high-caste Brahmin family and joined the British East India Company’s army in 1849 as a sepoy (soldier) in the 34th Bengal Native Infantry.
